MAGNETAWAN

In the heart of Algonquin and once a vibrant village with a historic past. The Village of Magnetawan is located at the intersection of the Nipissing Road and the Magnetawan River. In the Ojibway Indian dialect, Magnetawan meant, "swiftly flowing waters." From its headwaters in Algonquin Park, the Magnetawan River flows through lakes, rapids and waterfalls as it winds its way to Georgian Bay. Upstream from the village lies Lake Cecebe. As the river leaves the village, it forms Ahmic Lake, the midpoint of the watershed. The village was established circa 1870, the surrounding lakes began to develop as tourism destinations in the years thereafter. Families from Canada and the United States have visited for generations and formed a lasting bond with the townspeople. In 2011, an inn and grocery store were destroyed by a terrible fire. Undaunted and fired by love of the Village and the people who live there, a small but determined group of towns people and summer residents were dedicated to the rebirth of the town center. The Magnetawan Grill and Grocery stands as a testimony of the love and affection that the people of Magnetawan have for this place.
